Research plan & Welcome

Welcome to JCableMedia.com.

My name is John Cable, and I am a graduate of the University of Portsmouth where I achieved First-Class BA (Hons) Film Studies and MA Media and Communication with Distinction. My research focus is in British comedy.

This post isn’t to introduce myself (you can read more about me here), but rather to introduce my research plans for this website, which come as two steps:

1. Self-publication of my undergraduate and postgraduate research.

There is a selection of my undergraduate research I would like to return to. Not all the work from those three years holds up to the standard I would set myself today, but those that are I plan to revisit, tweak, and post.

Revisiting this work presents the opportunity to correct any spelling/formatting/referencing errors, break free of any essay word-count restrictions, to update or return to the research where appropriate, and to format the content for a blog, rather than an essay.

Due to these essays being written about a variety of subjects, no clear research focus will be noticeable, though some will be posted as a series of posts, as not to present walls of text when clicking into a post.

Publishing my dissertation An examination of superiority theory and power relations within the British sitcom Blackadder will mark the end of this step. At 8,500 words it will be split into several sections to form a series which can be read back-to-back as a long-form essay.

My postgraduate dissertation An examination of the comic fool within the British situational comedy Red Dwarf is work I plan on submitting for publication to an Academic journal.

2. Continuation of my research into British comedy.

I am extraordinarily keen to continue my education and to study for a PhD. Bringing something new to the academic table appeals to me greatly and there is no doubt in my mind that this research will be within the field of British comedy.

Officially starting PhD research is not as simple as it is for a Bachelors or Masters; A lot needs to fall into place, but this does not mean I cannot get a head start.

This work requires careful attention, so I feel it best not to set myself any tight deadlines, but I currently plan to have something to post once or twice a week. This of course may vary, but I would also like to keep a less formal blog. We will see how everything pans out!
